Day Three: Monday 4 August Cavalcade Day
Morning:
13:30pm Start of the Cavalcade A fantastic procession of the Cavalcade floats, lead by the Town Crier, Little Miss and Master Alderney followed by the wonderful Alderney Blowers, followed by the dancing troops of the KFA made their way slowly from Jackie Main’s Yard down the High Street , down Victoria Street and up to the Butes. Behind the town crier was a great gathering of motorbikes and vintage cars, followed by the colourful walking groups, and the stunning Miss Alderney Float “Cinderella”. Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers Holly Fraser and Miss Guernsey Hannah McLaughlin waving from their convertible vintage cars were followed by Miss Beaumont-Hague Angelique Hochet and her Maid of Honour from our French twinning town Beaumont-Hague and, in between the fantastic parade of floats, Mr. Beaumont-Hague Allan Orange and his two Mates in a convertible jeep. A large crowd followed the procession up to The Butes and it was by all accounts the best cavalcade parade ever - absolutely magical. This year’s theme “Pure Magic” provided excellent scope for floats and costumed walking groups and the Cavalcade sponsorship by Jersey building contractors Charles Le Quesne encouraged a high quality turn-out of floats. A comment from Caroline Ely of Les Coutures summed it up beautifully: “I have to say that the parade of floats is tremendous. Came to live here from Swanage last year and the carnival parade was meant to be the best on the South Coast, but it is nothing compared to Alderney Week’s parade and events as well. Just 2,500 people live here and Swanage has over 10,000 but they couldn’t put on as good a parade.”
On arrival at the Butes Fayre Ground, there was plenty of action offered by an array of stalls entertaining with games and competitions. Inside the Magic Tent our visiting magicians Gareth and Mark from Guernsey entertained all age groups as did the Puppet Theatre. The Alderney Blowers brought the Butes alive to the sound of music and then it was time to present the winners of this year’s Cavalcade entries with their trophies:
§ Best in Show: Miss Alderney’s Cinderella § Best Topical: KFA’s Alladin § Best Children’s Float : Salvation Army’s God’s Magic First Prize Ellis and Friends with “Alice in Wonderland”: Second Place § Best Costumes: Jenkins Clan with “Wizard of Oz”. § Most Entertaining: W.I.’s “Mad Hatters’ Tea Party”. § Most Creative: Campania’s ” Camp Fairies”. § Best Floral: Wildlife Trust’s “Magical Garden”. § Most Animated: Rotary Club’s “Magic Roundabout” § Best “Push and Pull: Lilly’s Fairy Castle .

And then the BIG surprise: just after 3pm, the first ever flypast by three Aurigny Trislanders to mark Aurigny’s a joint 100th anniversary: Aurigny celebrating its 40th anniversary and of course, Alderney Week, its 60th. It was absolutely amazing seeing these familiar planes flying in formation over the Butes, to the great applause and loud cheers from several thousand spectators on the ground. What a sight, what an experience!
Then the entertainment continued with the KFA’s magical dance routines and slightly rougher, the famous Tug of War competitions. The Junior competition was won by the Fat Boys (Louis Wood, Saul Woodruff, Alex Poole, Matt Jenkins, Ryan Bunn, Solly Trowell, Fran Sophe and Daniel Spencer).
