A week to remember: They were determined that the 60th anniversary Alderney Week would be something special. It certainly was.
From the moment the clouds rolled back for the sun to shine on the town crier’s opening salutation the week’s events flowed as a vibrant, frenzied swirl of colourful activity.
The cavalcade float creators were rewarded for their efforts by sunshine and a terrific reception from the crowds who later thronged The Butes for the rest of the afternoon’s entertainment.
Highlights of the week included the regular favourites, the man-powered flight and raft competitions, plus scores of events for the sporting-minded and the young and the young-at-heart.
The week reached a noisy crescendo with the most spectacular fireworks display seen on this island, cleverly choreographed with music, which followed the traditional torch-lit parade through the streets. It was a memorable week to be relived in conversation for some time to come.
Have to say that the parade of floats is tremendous. Came to live here from Swanage last year and the carnival parade was meant to be the best on the South Coast, but it is nothing compared to Alderney Week parade and events as well. 2,500 people live here and Swanage had over 10,000 and couldn’t put on as good a parade!!!!!
