The 60th Alderney Week kicked off with the dulcet tones of Alderney Town Crier Robin Whicker declaring the 9-day carnival open at precisely 13:00 o’clock at the bottom of Victoria Street, followed by the brassy music from the Alderney Blowers’ Oompah Band. And then it was an open invitation for would-be criers, young and old – who enjoyed the opportunity to share their vocal skills despite some dodgy script-writing; and the young Alderney Pommerettes and the KFA Teen Team displayed their dance skills and new costumes with lively fresh routines which received much applause from an expectant and appreciative audience.
Then everybody headed up to The Butes for the biggest kids’ party on the island attended by television personality Oscar Puffin who had flown in from Jersey especially to watch the agonising Little Miss and Master Alderney and Little Miss Holiday Princess contests, as well as a fancy dress competition and Terrific Toddler competition.
After much deliberation, the stressed judges confirmed the winners: Little Miss Alderney, Jessica Neal, Little Master Alderney Ian Adamson and Little Miss Holiday Princess Daisy Livesey from London who clinched the much coveted titles, sashes and prizes, will be leading the Cavalcade Parade on Monday. The Terrific Toddler was won by Miles Norwood , appropriately dressed up as a magician.
Meanwhile, Louis Dupont and Sarah White set up a big sporting challenge for the energetic youngsters with Alderney’s very own Mini Olympics which proved as exciting as the slightly bigger event somewhere in Beijing. And plenty of medals were awarded. Every child was also presented with a commemorative Alderney Week anniversary mug and a goodies box. Happy faces all round.
A well-deserved rest with a family picnic and entertainment provided by Lois FitzGerald’s puppet theatre with “The Ballad of Angus MacMineadouble”. And yes, the sun was shining throughout the afternoon.
Special private Functions on Day One in honour of all Miss Alderneys 1948-2008:
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Alderney Week, London-based Centre Films Media Sales invited all Miss Alderneys - from 1948 to 2008 - to a private Tea Party in the Anne French Room where they were filmed and interviewed for a feature film/programme “60 years of island life through the eyes of Miss Alderneys – decade by decade”. 28 former Miss Alderneys and the present Miss Alderney were happy to be interviewed.
Later that evening, the Alderney Week Team hosted a very special Vin d’Honneur and Cocktail Party, also in the Anne French Room, attended by over 30 former Miss Alderneys who were presented with a special diamond memento – a wonderful and glamorous reunion of beautiful ladies, including the first ever Miss Alderney 1948, Eileen Sykes. Many more would have liked to attend, however the cost of transport and the lack of available flights made this impossible.
The following Miss Alderney’s were able to attend the party on the day: Eileen Sykes (1948, 1949 & 1953), Miriam Kidd (1952), Dawn McLernon (1955), Ursula Cadoret (1957 & 1958), Patricia McLernon (1960),Sally Bohan (1963), Daphne Main (1964), Harriet Fane (1972), Candida Osborne (1976), Bonnie Jenkins (1977), Anita Giles (1979 & 1980), Paula Moore (1981), Tracey Jean (1983) Michelle Mitton (1984), Lisa Bunn (1985), Samantha Hogg (1986), Tania Miller (1988), Emma Dale (1993), Kerry Walker (1994), Claire Digney (1998), Charlotte Mauger (1999), Rebecca Maloy (2001), Laura Roberts (2002), Claire Shaw (2003), Gina Lowe (2004), Lianne Bunn (2006), Marie-Claire Jean (2007), Adele Woodruff (2008).

EVENING: 19:30 Big 60th Anniversary Family BBQ and Celebration Party– The Butes – sponsored by A.B. Shipping 21:00 Live music with “Churchill’s Children” followed by 60’s Disco on the Butes 21:00 Warm-up to Woodstock across the island’s favourite watering holes 23:00 Woodstock Quarry Party—at Corporation Quarry
Saturday evening was party-time for families and adults. Revellers enjoyed freshly barbecued burgers from Kiln Farm and the cheerful hospitality of the Bavaria Beer Tent where Zoë’s motley Bavaria Beer Tent team made sure nobody would go thirsty and while the Celebration Party was in full swing at The Butes, the island’s favourite watering holes also enjoyed booming trade from patrons in fancy dress who were warming up for that night’s “Woodstock” Quarry Party in Corporation Quarry, but not before joining everybody at the Butes Celebration Party.
Alderney’s very own R&B band “Churchill’s Children” gave their first performance with plenty of new material and, needless to say, they were an absolute hit. The party then continued until midnight to Rea Gregg’s funky disco music. The Quarry Party continued into the early morning hours, just in time to get home for breakfast.
The above photographs were taken Alderney Week Team Member Ilona Soane-Sands and independent photographer Paul Coles. We hope to add more photographs soon.
