All change as Miss Alderney 2011 Contest comes early and goes online
Tradition is important, but sometimes there is a need to break with tradition and move with the times. To ensure the continued popularity and success of the annual Miss Alderney contest, the Alderney Week Team has decided to introduce a few important changes to the date and format of this glamorous contest.
New Date: Easter Saturday 23 April
For many years the Miss Alderney contest , now in its 63rd year, has always taken place on the Saturday of the last May Bank Holiday . By talking to previous and potential candidates, we have established that , whilst most of the young ladies studying off island will be in Alderney for the Easter break, they are unable to commit themselves to be back for the Bank Holiday in May. We have therefore moved the date forward to Easter Saturday 23rd April , and hope this will result in a bigger turnout of candidates on the night.
New format : less formal
Traditionally, the format of the Miss Alderney contest involved candidates being interviewed by a panel of judges and then again being interviewed on stage in front of a large public, which some young ladies may have found daunting.
Under the new format, all contestants simply complete and submit the “Miss Alderney 2011” Entry Form , which you will be able to download here or receive by post. This form contains a series of easy personal and general questions which would normally have been asked by the panel of judges, and has to be submitted to the Alderney Week Team by no later than 20 April, together with a head & shoulders and full length photograph of the candidate. All entries will be considered strictly confidential.
However, all Miss Alderney contestants (aged between 17 and 25) are required to attend the Miss Alderney Celebration Party at the Island Hall on 23 April. They will be asked to join the Alderney Week Team in the Anne French room between 9.00pm and 9.30pm that night for a private and informal interview before returning to the Island Hall where a lively disco is guaranteed to create a great party atmosphere.
This year there will only be one winner – Miss Alderney 2011: no 2nd or 3rd place, and that means there will not be any Maids of Honour.
This decision was again taken based on the recommendation of previous candidates. Neither Miss Jersey or Miss Guernsey have Maids of Honour. However, Miss Alderney 2011 will be able to rely on the support of the Alderney Week Team and her friends and family, and hopefully also the families of Little Miss and Master Alderney.
The winner of the Miss Alderney 2011 contest will be announced and crowned around 10.30pm .

Cavalcade Float or Luxury Limousine?
That’s a decision for Miss Alderney to take. There will be a £250 contribution towards building her Cavalcade float. Alternatively, Miss Alderney has the option of being driven in a beautiful vintage Bentley convertible on Cavalcade Day.
Simple Entry Rules:
Candidates should be between 17 and 25 years of age, but you must be at least 17 years old on the first day of Alderney Week - 30 July 2011. Whilst looks are important, so is a bubbly, outgoing personality.
You are an Alderney resident and you are not married. You will be on the island throughout Alderney Week from 30 July to 6 August and you will be available and proud to represent your island at the Jersey Battle of Flowers and the Moonlight Parade on 11 and 12 August.
As to the duties of Miss Alderney , she will be asked to attend a number of major Alderney Week events to present prizes. These will be agreed between her and the Alderney Week Team.
The following week, Miss Alderney will represent her island at the Jersey Battle of Flowers and Moonlight Parade. Miss Alderney may also be invited to make appearances at other major events throughout her year of reign, both on and off the island, if she available and is happy to do so.
More details about the fabulous prizes, the programme of events for the Miss Alderney 2011 Celebration Disco Party and the duties of Miss Alderney will be published on this page and on our Facebook page as soon as these are finalised and will also be e-mailed or posted to all candidates who have submitted an entry form.
