Tuesday 4 August
Morning: Dawn Walk & Big Alderney Cooked Breakfast Auditions for “Alderney’s got Talent” for the under 16’s Paris Fashion Show- sponsored by Anchors and Richard Ward Opticians
Dedicated Followers of Fashion The Alderney Week Fashion Show just gets bigger and better each year and this morning around 250 people gathered around the catwalk at the Butes Stage to admire the latest collections of Alderney’s own fashion outlets Shirley’s, Anchors and Channel Jumper and additional leisure wear from Cycle & Surf. As always, compere Ray Parkin’s running commentary provided great entertainment.
Local models strutted their stuff to enthusiastic applause in an exciting array of ensembles ranging from elegant casual wear to smart and comfortable leisure wear for men, women and youngsters with some of the outfits designed and produced exclusively on island.
And as an unexpected highlight, the Bucks Fizz-sipping audience was treated to a fashion tour around the world. The good news is, every item modelled – except some of the fancy dress outfits which represented worldwide fashion - can be bought at the island’s fashion houses: Shirley’s, Anchor’s,Channel Jumper, Cycle & Surf and Claudia Gillingham’s own label of children’s leisure wear.

Junior Angling competition – and the ones that didn’t get away After last years sun drenched competition this year we had a breezy southerly wind to contend with but despite this the event had a record turnout since I have been doing it with 60 young anglers all wanting to win their categories. Split in to three age groups the aim is to land the biggest fish in each category with prizes of rods, reels and tackle for the top anglers.
Tide was very low to start with and the fishing was slow but as the tide increased more fish were brought to be weighed in. However unlike last year the variation on species was not experienced with Wrasse dominating the event. The under 6’s excelled and their enthusiasm never ceases to amaze. Top in this category was local lad Owen Carre with a Ballan Wrasse of 1lb 5oz. The 7-11 category had the biggest turn out of entrants thus prizes were awarded accordingly. Loads of endeavour and frustration showed at the early doors as fish were hard to come by but in the end there was a frenetic finish to this group. Guernsey lad and regular Jordan Palmeri thrived again and this year won his category with a fish of 1lb 7oz. Last but no means least the 12-16 lads and lasses had there best year, normally they do struggle a bit but this year they had the best fish of the competition with a Ballan of 1lb 15oz, this fell too another local lad Dean Smith which topped what turned out to be an impressive display of angling.
Species caught included Ballan, Cuckoo and Corkwing Wrasse and three types of gobies, one was a Tom Pot whilst the other two remain unidentified. Thanks to all the Mums and Dads that took the trouble to support the event too with other events going on.

THE GREAT RAILWAY ROBBERY Unsuspecting travellers on Alderney’s Railway found themselves subjected to a raid by Cowboys and Red Indians and, at gun point, were asked to part with their hard-earned dollars. But money not coming forward – clearly a sign of the credit crunch - the train robbers took pity on their victims and showered them with chocolate money and presents instead. Wouldn’t it be great if all robberies could end with happy, chocolate-smeared faces all round?
