Day Three: Monday 4 August – Cavalcade Day:

Day Three:  Monday 3 August

Cavalcade Day

 Morning:

  • Junior Tennis competitions
  • Excerpts from “The Winter’s Tale” performed by the Rain or Shine Theatre Company in the Memorial Gardens
  • More tennis competitions

13:30pm  Start of the Cavalcade

This year’s theme “Around the World in 8 Days” produced the most fantastic cavalcade parade of no less than 9 award-winning floats. Even motorbikes, old timer vehicles and fancy dress walking groups found a way of interpreting the theme and earned more prizes and trophies. For the first time, judging of all cavalcade entries took place before the procession.

At 13:30 sharp the colourful procession of the Cavalcade floats, lead by the Town Crier, Little Miss and Master Alderney , Little Holiday Prince and Princess and Best Fancy Dress Boy,  followed by the wonderful Alderney Blowers and  the dancing troops of the KFA made their way slowly from Jackie Main’s Yard down the High Street , down Victoria Street and up to the Butes.

The first  float to lead the parade was Miss Alderney’s stunning creation which took over 10,000 home-made paper flowers to produce. Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers  Lucy O’Sullivan and  Miss Guernsey Natalie Thoumine were waving at the crowds from Ian Waterfall’s vintage Morris,  followed by Miss Beaumont-Hague Audrey Zannati and her Maid of Honour Aurelie Allegre in Ray Parkin’s Triumph Vitesse 2000 and Mr. Beaumont-Hague Anthony  Lechevalier and his Mate of Honour Sylvain Lechevalier in Tom Grabham’s Moke. Then arrived the fancy dress walking groups, followed by the floats, one-by-one, the motorbikes and old-timer vehicles, all heading for the Butes.

On arrival at the Butes Cavalcade Fair which this year was sponsored by Bavaria Beer, there was plenty of action offered by an array of stalls entertaining with games and competitions.  The brand new beer tent which during Alderney Week is called “The Bavaria Beer Tent” did a roaring trade and Zoë Sowden and her happy bar staff – all volunteers and members of the 41 Club made sure nobody had a thirsty moment. Some of the crew were  sporting the Dutch national colour of orange, adding an international flavour to the event.

Another tent also proved a very popular venue: the Monte Carlo Casino Tent invited you to a game of play Black Jack, Roulette or Crown and Anchor – with all proceeds going towards the Rotary Club’s charitable causes.

And nobody could resist those yammie cakes in the Tea Room served by equally yammie waitresses.

The Alderney Blowers brought the Butes alive to the sound of their great foot-tapping music repertoire and then it was time to present the winners of this year’s Cavalcade entries with their trophies:

The entertainment continued with the KFA’s energetic dance routines and slightly rougher, the famous Tug of War competitions. The 30th Signals the island’s adopted regiment, had set up camp to with an inter-active exhibition display.

The Tug of War Men’s contest was won by the “Grants Uphill Gardeners” with the 30 Signals, led by a beautiful blonde,  in second place. The Ladies Winning Team were the Smart Tarts with Team Leader Emma Odoli who had plenty to shout about on Saturday morning when she emerged as the winner of the Town Crier Competition.  A brilliant day and exhausting day – everybody having fun and Cookie the Fortune Dragon crumbled….

By all accounts, this was the best cavalcade parade ever….. but  then they did say that last year, and year before, and the year before that…..

Alderney Week just gets better and better….
