ALDERNEY WEEK 2008 (2-10 August)

ALDERNEY WEEK 2008 LOGO DESIGN COMPETITION

WINNER PULLS OUT OF THE HAT

This year’s Bailiwick-wide appeal to everybody under the age of 18 to design an eye-catching logo for Alderney Week 2008 resulted in over 50 entries from Alderney’s St. Anne’s and Ormer House schools.

Alderney Week 2008 is very special, as it marks the 60th anniversary of Alderney Week since the end of the war and, quite appropriately, this year’s chosen theme is “Pure Magic” 'which sums up the sixty magical years of Alderney Weeks since 1948.

The brief for all contestants was to produce, using not more than 3 colours, a logo which would embrace the number 60 and Pure Magic.

The quality of entries and the level of creativity was most impressive and made the onerous task of choosing the winning design and 9 runners-up harder than ever. After much deliberation the panel - which included the Alderney Week Team and James Varley, editor of the Alderney Journal -  unanimously went for 13-year old John Adamson’s hat trick logo.

“Magicians, Tinkerbells, magic puffins, puffing dragons and  bunnies popping out of hats were in abundance. However, John’s  design was without doubt the most striking. It looks professional and does convey our theme of Pure Magic”, said Alderney Week Team Leader Ronnie Cairnduff.

John’s logo which depicts a bunny hiding inside a magician’s hat  and next to it a magic wand producing a sparkling Number 60 will feature on T-shirts, baseball caps, the Alderney Week Programme, posters and our stationery and can be used by all Alderney Week sponsors. And this year’s Alderney Week mascot is John’s magic wand which will turn every Alderney Week event into pure magic.”

Asked what inspired him to come up with the winning design, John said: “I wanted to produce a simple but striking logo. The first thing that came to my mind was a top hat and, rather than showing a bunny,  I thought it would be much funnier to have its ears peaking out of the hat. Besides, I’m not very good at drawing paws or feet. The magic wand would put a spell on the number sixty to make it very special, and the Alderney lion is, well, Alderney”. Incidentally, last year’s logo design winner was John’s 8-year old brother Ian with his amazing Marilyn Monroe design.
